ZiggyTeflon Fumes Our chinchilla, Ziggy, inhabits the dining room of our small apartment. Unfortunately, this took a few times for my husband and me to figure out. When I was cooking French bread on the stove (the kitchen adjoins the Dr) in a Teflon frying pan, Ziggy would have an episode. He would become weak and stumble around and put his ears down. At this sight, one of us would pick him up and move him to another room where he would come out of it and resume normal behavior. We also discovered that holding him by a screened window helped his recovery process. Eventually we saw the connection between the Teflon pan and his episodes. This only occurs when the pan is very hot. We can still cook most anything we want in the pan, but we have to remove Ziggy from the room if we want French toast or pancakes. Maybe this is common knowledge to everyone (I had heard that Teflon is highly toxic to parakeets), but we didn't know. Ziggy doesn't seem to be at all worse for the wear, and he still likes his cage to be in the dining room where he can remind us that we owe him a treat every time we eat. Hope this is helpful for someone. Received by email 1st May 2004 Reference Link The silent killer |
