"The relationship between man and the wild chinchilla goes back to ancient times. Records show that Incas ate chinchilla meat and used the fur for coats. Man only became a threat to the survival of the chinchilla species in the early 1800's when commercial hunting began. The hunting of Chinchillas was regulated in the early 1900's and banned some time later but this was too late and the wild chinchilla is still under threat of extinction."
