Accidents

Shinka

From Claud, Poland

Check what your chins bite! My chins were very often released from the cage and they run and played around in my room. They had a lot of places to hide and a lot of wooden things to bite. I heard many times they bit something but I did not check it carefully thinking that chins instinct will allow them to avoid danger and toxic materials. It is a truth but only to certain extent. The exception in my room were electric wires put away from places chins were able to get into.

Several days ago I realized that Shinka from one day to another becomes more and more lazy and slower. In the beginning we started to think she's pregnant but in fact she was then already heavily intoxicated. The problem was she was acting almost completely normal - no problems with belly, moving etc. Only her reactions were slowing down and more and more lazy. Few days later when the "laziness" reached certain level we called vet but it was already too late - Shinka finally died on my hands on 18th of June 2002.

Since I have also second chin at home I wanted to know what the reason was. The vet supposed firstly electric shock, but it was impossible - we have checked all wires and cables twice and they did not have any traces of biting. Few days later I accidentally started to examine the window and I found large wooden "stain" completely eaten around from old and thick (0.5-1 mm) layer of white paint (5-6 square centimeters). I have often seen Shinka in the vicinity of the place I found "stain", I also heard noises she was biting something there.

It brought me a sad and very painful lesson

If your chin changes his behaviour there certainly must be a reason Do not wait then to visit vet otherwise it may be too late for your pet to be rescued. I was told that bringing Shinka to vet few days earlier could keep her alive.

Webmaster's comment

Worried about my chins who 'redecorate my painted skirting boards etc.' I asked Claud if the paint could have lead in it, here is his answer "I think it could have lead in it. The building was erected in 1965 and certainly at this age nobody in Poland was interested in "green" standards. As I said there was many layers of the paint one on the others and the paint became hard, thick and rigid."
