Webmaster's experience

November 2004. Unfortunately Lucky was losing weight and dropped to 600g. I changed veterinary practices and Lucky was booked in, for a spur op initially and if nothing found, then blood tests/x-rays.

One tiny spur was found with no signs of it causing a sore on gums or tongue, so they took a blood test. When the results came they were virtually clear, kidney's not 100% but good for her age, nothing to cause such weight loss.

There then followed a few weeks of trial and error with Lucky eating, mainly Supreme Science Recovery, an anabolic steroid to boost her appetite was tried and then half a drop of Metacam (pain killer) a day. Each treatment bought a small weight gain followed by further loss.

December 2004. She couldn't continue losing weight, she was now 520g, so we decided an x-ray should be taken, this failed to show any problems but further investigation of her teeth revealed that she had worn a ridge into the inner edge of her lower molars, these edges were very sharp so that any tongue movement would have been very painful. The upper molars were perfect, which makes no sense but that's chinchillas for you!! The teeth were burred down and the sharp edges rounded. Lucky regained her appetite and steadily gained weight. March 16th 2005 she weighed in at 680g.

Lucky needed another spur op at the end of March, as I write this on June 22nd 2005 she weighs in at 728g and is not showing any symptoms of further trouble yet :) Her weight gain has much to do with a special herd supplement kindly given to me by Sue , a chinchilla rescuer

I was a little worried about changing vets as it would be a bit difficult to go back to previous ones and explain she'd had treatment elsewhere however I am extremely impressed with this surgery . Everything has been discussed in detail and I even have post-op care instructions written into a get well card.

Christmad 2005. Lucky developed another abscess see Chinwags thread followed by another spur op then she caught a cold, sadly it all became too much for her see Chinwags thread but I am very glad we had a bonus 9 months where she was fit and well and showed no signs of pain.
