Why Chins

In memory of L.C. & Cheeky

Webmaster's experience

Cheeky and L.C. were two single re homes who really paired themselves up. I didn't have internet access at that time and didn't know that two adult females could be safely paired so it was a whole year before I let them play out together and a further year before I dared to let them stay in the same cage.

For six years they were the best of friends with never a cross word between them.

L.C. just a couple of days before she left us
Then in January 2005 when it was time to go back in their cage after their run L.C. wasn't quite right. She was lying under the storage heater I picked her up and at first we thought she had got overheated but it was nearly midnight and later, examining the heater it was barely tepid at the bottom what little heat was left was at the top.

L.C. just wanted to sleep and within a very short space of time she passed away, she showed no signs of pain or distress and I felt comforted by how peaceful her leaving us was.

So that Cheeky knew what had happened I popped L.C. in with her for a few moments. I had expected Cheeky to sniff and then move away, as L.C. had done with her first partner so many years before. Cheeky lay down side by side with her best friend which worried me a little but she took a raisin so I hoped if she would eat then all would be okay.

Cheeky a real character being held was not on her favourites list

Indeed she did continue to eat and act normally but she started losing weight. She had a blood prick test for diabetes which indicated her sugar levels were high but a later urine test ruled out diabetes.

Further tests were booked for a Monday but on the Sunday morning just three weeks after we lost L.C. she was obviously feeling very poorly. Hunched up and cold she just wanted to crawl into a corner and be left alone. It became apparent she was not going to pass away quickly and painlessly like her cage mate, our vet kindly agreed to meet me at the surgery where, after a quick check to see if it was her teeth (all looked perfect) she was put to sleep.

L.C. and Cheeky
Together forever and very much missed.
