Castration

Feedback

From Anna (UK)

"I have had two of my boys (father & son) castrated so that they would be able to stay with the females as a family group without producing any more babies.

The female already had two litters and as a mother myself, I did not think it was fair for her to be constantly pregnant and producing babies. Any woman who has had children will tell you how exhausting this is. And of course, pregnancy and birth carry their own risks.

The dad was castrated when he was 6 years old - and he was very weak afterwards for a about a day but came round. He has not had any problems from the op and is happier now (more lively) now that he

The son was recently castrated and he has got really fat as food is now his main interest (although he was chubby before the op).

He developed an abscess at the site of the castration because I let him bathe in his dust bath too soon, and had to have antibiotics for ages.

They all live as a family of 4 very happily and the females have not rejected them. All 4 are always huddled together at bedtime.

Some people might say a castration on any animal is an unnecessary operation and of course, like any operation it carries a risk.

I would only ever consider castrating a healthy animal with no known heart or health problems and only if the castration can give a better quality of life (for example, living in a social group as opposed to living alone - Chinchillas are social animals and need company of their own kind).

It is important to find a good vet first. Do not be shy to ask the vet for a consultation first before deciding to go ahead. A good vet will take his or her time to talk to you about the options and explain things."

"I have been reading your articles on castration of chins, I have a year old male who was castrated at 8 months with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Only thing was he looked a bit sorry for himself for a few days!"
